How do I know my water heater needs attention?

  • No hot water, or not enough of it
  • Lukewarm water, or water that swings between hot and cold
  • Rust-coloured or cloudy hot water
  • Rumbling, popping or banging from the tank
  • Water around the base of the tank or at the fittings
  • A unit that is past the typical lifespan for its type

What do we do on a water heater job?

  • Find the cause of the problem, whether it is the heating element or burner, the thermostat, a valve or a leak.
  • Repair the unit when a repair is practical.
  • Replace the water heater when the tank is leaking or a repair no longer makes sense.
  • Install the new unit and check the connections and operation.
  • Explain your options, so you can choose a replacement that suits your household or business.

What affects the cost of a water heater repair or replacement?

Every job is different. The main factors are:

  • Repair or replacement
  • The type of unit (tank or tankless) and the fuel it uses
  • The size or capacity of the unit
  • The condition and layout of the existing piping, venting and electrical or gas connections
  • How easy it is to reach the unit

Prices depend on the job, so we give a quote for each one. Call 613-446-5959 or request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a water heater last?

A tank water heater commonly lasts around 8 to 12 years, depending on water quality and maintenance. Tankless units often last longer. If yours is near or past that range and starts to fail, replacement is usually a better investment than repeated repairs.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

A repair makes sense for a newer unit with a failed part, such as a thermostat or a valve. If the tank itself is leaking, replacement is the only fix. For an older unit with repeated problems, replacement is usually the better choice. We diagnose first and explain both options.

Why is my water heater making noise?

Rumbling or popping usually points to sediment built up at the bottom of the tank, which makes the burner or element work harder. Flushing can sometimes help, but noise together with leaks, or on an older unit, may mean the tank is wearing out.

What should I do if my water heater is leaking?

Turn off the power or gas to the unit and close its cold water supply, then call us. A leak from a fitting or a valve can often be repaired. A leak from the tank itself means the unit needs to be replaced.

Do you replace water heaters in commercial buildings?

Yes. GD Plumbing does both residential and commercial plumbing.

How much does a water heater replacement cost?

It depends on whether you need a repair or a replacement, the type and size of the unit, and the condition of the existing connections. Prices vary from job to job, so we give a quote for each one. Call 613-446-5959 or request a quote.
