How do I know if I have a leak?

  • Water stains or discolouration on ceilings, walls or floors
  • A musty smell or visible mould
  • A water bill that has gone up with no change in how you use water
  • The sound of running water when everything is turned off
  • Low water pressure
  • Dripping under sinks or around appliances such as a washing machine

What should I do if I find a leak?

  1. Close the shut-off valve for the leaking fixture. If you cannot isolate it, shut off the main water supply.
  2. Keep clear of electrical outlets, panels and anything plugged in near the water.
  3. Mop up standing water and move belongings out of the way to limit damage.
  4. Call a plumber. Take photos of the damage in case you need them for your insurance.

What do we do for leaks and piping problems?

  • Locate the source of the leak.
  • Repair or replace damaged pipes, fittings and valves.
  • Fix leaking fixtures and the water connections to appliances.
  • Diagnose drain and water flow problems.
  • Explain what caused the leak and how to avoid a repeat.

How can I prevent leaks and water damage?

  • Know where your main water shut-off is.
  • Check under sinks and around appliances from time to time.
  • Replace aging washing machine hoses.
  • Do not ignore a small drip. It rarely fixes itself.
  • Insulate pipes in unheated areas.

What affects the cost of leak repair?

Every leak is different. The main factors are:

  • Where the leak is and how easy it is to reach
  • How many leaks there are and how far the damage extends
  • The pipe material and how much pipe has to be repaired or replaced
  • Whether walls, ceilings or floors have to be opened to reach the pipe
  • Damage to walls, floors and belongings from escaped water is separate from the plumbing repair and may be a matter for your home insurance

Frequently asked questions

Should I deal with a small leak right away?

Any leak deserves attention soon, because even a slow drip can damage walls, floors and cabinets and lead to mould over time. A burst pipe, or a leak you cannot stop, is more urgent: shut off the water supply and call a plumber.

How can I find a hidden leak?

Check your water meter. Turn off every tap and appliance, note the reading, wait about 30 minutes without using any water, then check again. If the reading has moved, water is going somewhere. Unexplained stains and a rising water bill are other signs. A plumber can then locate the source.

What causes pipes to leak?

Common causes are age and corrosion, worn or loose fittings, freezing, and damage from other work. A plumber can identify the specific cause so the repair lasts.

Should I shut off the water if I find a leak?

Yes, if you cannot stop the leak quickly. Close the shut-off valve for that fixture, or the main water supply if there is no local valve, then call a plumber.

Do you repair leaks in commercial buildings?

Yes. GD Plumbing does both residential and commercial plumbing.

How much does leak repair cost?

It depends on where the leak is, how much piping is affected and how much access is needed. Prices vary from job to job, so we give a quote for each one. Call 613-446-5959 or request a quote.
