How do I know my sump pump needs attention?

  • Water pooling in the sump pit or in the basement
  • A pump that runs constantly, or never turns on
  • A pump that switches on and off very often
  • Grinding, rattling or other unusual noises
  • A damp basement or musty smell after heavy rain or snowmelt
  • A pump that is many years old

What should I do if my basement is taking on water?

  1. Stay out of standing water if outlets, appliances or the electrical panel could be affected.
  2. If it is safe, check that the pump is plugged in and that its breaker has not tripped.
  3. Move belongings out of the wet area.
  4. Call a plumber.

What do we do on a sump pump job?

  • Find out why water is collecting and why the pump is failing.
  • Repair the pump, float switch or discharge piping when a repair is practical.
  • Replace a pump that has failed or worn out.
  • Install a new sump pump.
  • Check that the pump starts, drains the pit and sends water away from the house.

How can I keep my sump pump working?

  • Test it before the spring melt and before heavy rain: pour water into the pit and check that the pump starts and empties it.
  • Keep the pit clear of debris.
  • Make sure the discharge line is clear and not frozen.
  • Remember that a plug-in pump cannot run during a power outage.

What affects the cost of sump pump repair or replacement?

Every home is different. The main factors are:

  • Repair or replacement
  • The type and size of the pump
  • The condition of the pit, check valve and discharge piping
  • How easy it is to reach the pit and where the water has to be sent

Frequently asked questions

How long does a sump pump last?

A sump pump commonly lasts around 7 to 10 years, depending on how often it runs. If yours is in that range and starts to struggle, replacing it before a storm is safer than waiting for it to fail.

How do I know if my sump pump is working?

Pour a few buckets of water into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should start and the pit should empty. If nothing happens, or it runs without emptying the pit, call a plumber.

Why is my sump pump running all the time?

Common causes are high groundwater, a stuck float switch, a failed check valve that lets water flow back into the pit, or a pump that is too small. A plumber can tell which it is.

Why won’t my sump pump turn on?

Check that it is plugged in and that the breaker has not tripped. Other causes include a stuck float switch or a failed motor. If it still will not start, call a plumber.

Do you service sump pumps in commercial buildings?

Yes. GD Plumbing does both residential and commercial plumbing.

How much does a sump pump replacement cost?

It depends on the type and size of the pump and the condition of the pit and piping. Prices vary from job to job, so we give a quote for each one. Call 613-446-5959 or request a quote.

Where do we do this work?
